Read Across Arkansas Family Service Day
Read Across Arkansas is a state-wide day of service encouraging families and individuals to volunteer at their local libraries to read a book to children. In Arkansas, only 18% of children under 6 have a parent who reads to them at least 3 times a week. Why is this important? Because early literacy is tied to many indicators of success, including academic performance, self-esteem and positve behavior, and likelihood of completing high school. Read Across Arkansas envisions a single day where every child in Arkansas is able to enjoy a book with an adult. Volunteers are needed at all Woodruff County Library branches to encourage and promote enthusiasm for reading. Volunteers will read books to children, help youth sign up for library cards, and register preschoolers for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. The event at Augusta, Cotton Plant, and McCrory will take place on August 12th from 9:00 am until noon, and volunteers can attend for the whole day of for an hour time slot. We hope you'll join us and hundereds of other volunteers around the state as we mobilize to Read Across AR!
