Position Description: Arkansas STEM Ecosystem VISTA
The Arkansas STEM Coalition is focused on improving access to quality Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs across the state. The project seeks to improve access and equity in STEM learning and workforce readiness to underserved and high poverty populations, many of which reside in rural communities of the state.
The Arkansas STEM Coalition is working to achieve optimal impact of the various efforts currently happening in the state by 1) conducting an inventory of the STEM programs that exist in Arkansas 2) identifying high quality STEM programs and building awareness about them, and 3) making recommendations on ways to improve the availability of programs and program quality. The Arkansas STEM Coalition will host ecosystem partner meetings and regional convenings to bring together stakeholders across the state to strategize on ways to meet ecosystem goals and improve STEM and career connected learning and outcomes for adults from any zip code.
The Arkansas STEM Ecosystem Initiative is focused on closing the STEM skills gap and improving access and equity to STEM based resources. The vision of the Arkansas STEM Ecosystem is for Arkansas to be a state where all people have equal access and opportunity to engage in quality STEM learning experiences that increase their ability to succeed in education, career, and community, leading to a vibrant and dynamic economy.
The AmeriCorps VISTA member will provide vital capacity building support to help coordinate the efforts of the Arkansas STEM Ecosystem Initiative. Reporting to the Executive Director, the VISTA member will:
Assist in planning, coordination and facilitation of STEM Ecosystem regional meetings, steering committee meetings, and program development
Conduct database entry of STEM programs around the state
Promote organizational and STEM Ecosystem sustainability by researching funding opportunities, assisting in research and writing grants, and developing outreach mechanisms and.
Create fact sheets about STEM programs, quality measures, best practices, and information related to STEM jobs, graduation trends, internships, and apprenticeships across the state
Assist in the analysis of the STEM landscape study to identify gaps and disparities in opportunities, programs, and services and to strategize with the STEM Coalition and ecosystem partners on ways to narrow gaps and increase STEM learning opportunities
Assist in the development of a communications plan and regular social media, monthly newsletter, and stories to share STEM ecosystem happenings and highlight programs
This is a full-time national service position that provides a living allowance of $13,362 over the course of one year, plus a $6,195 education award or a $1,800 cash stipend at the end of a successful one-year term of service. Health insurance is not available, but some health coverage to help with the cost of co-pays and other medical expenses is available to VISTAs. Childcare assistance and relocation assistance are available to VISTAs who qualify. One year of non-competitive eligibility for federal employment are also available. Some professional development training opportunities are offered and paid for by Arkansas STEM Coalition. You are responsible for your own housing and other living expenses.
The ideal VISTA candidate will be a self-starter and able to manage projects and tasks with minimal supervision.
Strong interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking skills
Experience developing and overseeing programs or projects
Knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Good work ethic
Experience with data entry or report retrieval from a database
Knowledge regarding social media use and best practices
Ability to organize basics of meeting planning
Ability to work well with a team and problem solve
Must be 18 years or older
Must have a valid drivers’ license and be willing to travel in Arkansas
Must be able to lift 35 pounds
Must be a United States citizen, national or permanent resident
Bachelor’s degree preferred
Must commit to serve full-time (35 hours a week) for a one-year term, starting November 2020
