Diverse donors needed for sickle cell patients
There is an ongoing critical need for blood donations for patients with sickle cell disease, the most common genetic blood disease in the U.S. Sickle cell patients are at high risk of serious complications from coronavirus infection.
Fighting off lung infections, like coronavirus, can cause red blood cells to form a C-shape, or sickle. When this happens, red blood cells cannot deliver oxygen throughout the patient's body.
Blood transfusion is a known treatment for patients with sickle cell disease, so healthy donors can be lifesavers for these patients. Diverse blood donors are especially needed now to help maintain the blood supply. Learn more about blood & diversity at RedCrossBlood.org
